Police Investigate Fourth Traffic Fatality of 2017

Date: Monday, January 23, 2017, 17:20
Location: Interstate Highway 37 at Callicoate

Event: Vehicle Crash with Fatal Injury
Case Number: 1701230121

The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section is investigating the years fourth vehicle crash with a fatal injury which happened Monday afternoon at Interstate Highway 37 at Callicoate Road.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a vehicle crash at 5:20pm on the northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 37 headed toward Calallen north of Callicoate Road. Officers learned that a boy had not survived the crash, and Officers requested additional resources which included the Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section. Investigators learned that a 25-year-old woman travelled north on Interstate Highway 37 in her Dodge Ram truck in the far right lane when traffic in front of the Dodge truck stopped due to normal traffic issues. The Dodge truck operated by the 25-year-old woman did not slow and struck a Ford Focus driven by a 29-year-old woman who had two children passengers ages 4 and 7. The Ford Focus went into the jersey barrier and then struck a Nissan Titan, which hit a Buick Rendezvous. The rear of the 25-year-old woman’s truck went airborne and sent her truck sideways. The Dodge truck also struck the Titan and Rendezvous. The truck then landed on the driver side, with the passenger side doors faced to the sky. The driver of every vehicle involved in the crash, except for the Rendezvous, was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The 25-year-old woman and the driver of the Titan were taken to Northwest Regional with minor injuries. The 29-year-old woman driver of the Focus was taken to Memorial Medical Center and her 7-year-old daughter was taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital, both with injuries believed to be non-life threatening. The 4-year-old boy in the Focus was killed on impact, as he sat properly restrained in a car seat in the back seat on the side that the Dodge Ram struck. Several witnesses stopped and gave statements to Investigators.

Investigators do not believe alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.

The 25-year-old woman’s phone was collected as evidence, and Investigators intend to get warrant to search the phone. No criminal charges have been filed related to this case as of 11pm Monday night.

Anyone with any additional information about this crash should contact the Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section at 886-2600 during normal business hours.

Corpus Christi Police Record More Arrests For Intoxicated Driving In 2016 Than Any Other Year

The Corpus Christi Police arrested more people for intoxicated driving in 2016 than in any other year of the Department’s history.

Corpus Christi Police arrested 1,428 people for intoxicated driving in 2016 and the previous record was in 2014 with 1, 407 arrests for intoxicated driving. Corpus Christi Police have already recorded 15 arrests for intoxicated driving so far in 2017.

Corpus Christi Police explain the 1,428 arrests for intoxicated driving as: 14 for Driving Under the Influence which means the person was less than 21 years of age when they were arrested for intoxicated driving; and there were 132 felony accusations. The 132 accusations are that 86 arrests were for D.W.I. with three or more prior convictions; 11 arrests for intoxicated assault (in which someone was injured in a crash caused by an intoxicated person); 32 arrests for D.W.I. with a child passenger; and 3 arrests for Intoxicated Manslaughter (in which a person died in a crash caused by an intoxicated driver).

Corpus Christi Police collected blood or breath specimens to be analyzed for the blood alcohol concentration from all 1,428 arrested people except for 5 cases in which that evidence was not obtained. The average results from the analysis for blood alcohol concentration was .15 which is almost twice the legal limit of .08, the state standard to determine someone is prima facia intoxicated. There were 415 arrests for intoxicated driving which involved a vehicle crash which means 1,013 of the arrests for intoxicated driving were discovered on Officer initiated traffic stops.

Corpus Christi Police Make Many Arrests For Intoxicated Driving Over Christmas

The Corpus Christi Police are pleased to announce that there were no injuries or fatalities on Corpus Christi roadways over the Christmas weekend due to intoxicated driving, partly because of strict enforcement by Officers which got many intoxicated drivers off the road before they could injure someone.

Corpus Christi Police arrested 15 people for intoxicated driving from December 23rd to December 26th.

Officers arrested:
9 people for driving while intoxicated as a first offense during the Christmas weekend;
2 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated with a prior conviction of D.W.I.;
2 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated with a Blood Alcohol Concentration over twice the legal limit;
and 2 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated with an open container of alcohol in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

One Officer arrested 27 year old Andres Narvaez (8/10/1989) for driving while intoxicated as a first offense and found Narvaez was in possession of a loaded black Colt 380 handgun. Narvaez was additionally charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon because the Texas Penal Code Section 46.02 prohibits an intoxicated person from possession of a firearm while operating a motor vehicle.

Corpus Christi Police will be out in full force again this coming weekend for New Years for strict enforcement of intoxicated driving for the effort to make our roadways safer. Always plan to have a sober driver. D.W.I.’s are the worst hangovers.

The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section is investigating the 29th vehicle crash with a fatal injury of 2016 which happened Sunday night at the Airline exit ramp on State Highway 358.

Drunk Drivers Beware: State Pays for Extra Corpus Christi Police Officers On DWI Patrol

The Corpus Christi Police Department will participate in the Impaired Driving Mobilization (IDM) grant offered by the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) which means more Corpus Christi Police Officers will be available to enforce Driving While Intoxicated offenses from December 15th, 2016 until January 1st, 2017.

TXDOT has offered the grant to reduce the number of impaired driving fatalities on Texas roadways. The grant pays for overtime for Officers so that they may focus specifically on traffic enforcement related to impaired motor vehicle operation during times when alcohol related crashes are most frequent.
