Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Carroll and McArdle in reference to a criminal mischief in progress. Officers were contacted by a witness who advised that a black SUV intentionally struck another vehicle. The witness pointed the officers in the direction. Officers made contact with the 55 year old female suspect. She advised that she got into a disturbance with the 29 year old female victim. The suspect met with the victim about medical services. The suspect confronted the victim because her purse was taken and she felt she was set up by the victim. Officers asked the suspect if she struck the victims vehicle to which she denied and stated the victim stuck her vehicle.

Officers contact the victim who stated that she was being followed by the suspect . The victim stated that the suspect struck her vehicle from behind. The victim turned onto Carroll and was still being followed by the suspect. The victim stopped at a park to pick up her children and noticed that the suspect was still driving in a reckless manner. The victim had seated a 7 year old female and a 10 year old male in the back seat when the front of her vehicle was struck by the suspect. The victim stated that she does not know the suspect and had no prior contact with her. The victim stated that she did get into a struggle with the suspect over her keys because she did not want her to leave.

Officers contacted the witness a second time and he advised that he saw the suspect vehicle intentionally strike the victims vehicle twice. Officers arrested Esmeralda Ybarra (11-21-1961) for aggravated assault and transported her to the City Detention Center.

Event: Loose pot bellied pig

Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to 600 SPID in reference to a call of a large pot bellied pig following customers in the parking lot of Stripes. Officers arrived and located the suspected animal. The pot bellied pig appeared to be a pet but had injuries to its back. The pot bellied pig was friendly and was contained in the area until animal control officers arrived and took custody of it. It is unknown where the animal came from. If you have any knowledge of this pot bellied pig please contact Animal Care Services.

Keep Your Hands Off The Bats

After three separate reports of humans coming into contact with bats, the Corpus Christi Animal Care Services wants to remind people to never touch a bat.

On November 9, a 48-year-old female went to get medical treatment when she came down with a fever, fatigue, and body aches after handling a bat with her bare hands at work.  The female said that she found the bat on the ground, and picked it up.  Doctors are planning on starting the woman on rabies treatment.

Earlier in the week, a 59-year-old female was at work when she was struck in the back of her head by a flying bat.  Doctors are also planning to start her on the rabies treatment.

A 26-year-old truck driver was attacked last week by a bunch of bats when he was leaving the loading dock of business in the Five Points area.  He was given the rabies treatment as a precaution.

Bats have such small teeth, most people do not even know that they have been bitten.  Bats also can secrete the rabies virus in their saliva. Since bats are a carrier for the rabies virus, it is very dangerous to touch one with your bare hands.

Animal Care Services will not respond to calls regarding bats flying around, however, if you find one on the ground call 361-826-4622.

 

Mike Markle Appointed Interim Chief

Interim Police Chief Mike Markle

Mike Markle has been named Interim Chief of the Corpus Christi Police Department.  Chief Markle is a 25 year veteran of the department.

Chief Markle holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Saint Leo University and recently completed his Masters of Business Administration from the American Military University.

In 2013 he completed the Senior Management Institute of Police, a course designed to prepare today’s police executives for the challenges of the next decade and beyond.  He also recently completed the Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar, or LEEDS, that is designed for chief executive officers of the nation’s mid-sized law enforcement agencies administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Police Executive Research Forum.  Locally, he serves as a board of directors member of the Wesley Community Center.

Prior to his appointment as Interim Chief, Chief Markle served as Assistant Police Chief overseeing the Operations Division. This was a position he was appointed to in May 2012.

It is with deepest regrets that we must inform the community that our Chief of Police, Floyd Simpson, was involved in a motorcycle accident this afternoon in Port Aransas, Texas. Despite all efforts by medical personnel, Chief Simpson succumbed to his injuries at approximately 5:30pm today. Please keep his family and our officers in your thoughts and prayers.

More information will follow at a later time.

Floyd D. Simpson became Corpus Christi’s 22nd Chief of Police on March 12, 2012, following a distinguished career with the Dallas Police Department where he retired at the rank of Assistant Chief.

Chief Simpson brought extensive management experience, where as Assistant Chief in Dallas he oversaw both the Patrol and Administration Bureaus during his 25 year tenure.

Chief Simpson achieved a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University and earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Amber University. He was a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management Institute, the FBI National Academy, and the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas. He served on the Executive Committee of Special Olympics Texas – Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Chief Simpson was married for 27 years and was the proud father of four children. Chief Simpson was an avid runner having completed four marathons, and also enjoyed riding his motorcycle during his few spare moments away from work.

Dog Attacks Boy, Criminal Charges Possible Against Dog’s Owner

A 12-year-old boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance after he was attacked by a dog on the 800 block of Vancura Drive Tuesday night. Corpus Christi Police responded to a call of the attack at 7:02pm Tuesday night and discovered the 12-year-old boy had injuries to his face and arms. The Corpus Christi Animal Care Services captured the dog and have scheduled the dog to be euthanized. The dog will then be taken to Austin for an examination for communicable diseases. Police Officers have identified the owner of the dog and there is a consideration for criminal charges to be applied against the dog’s owner.

Detectives will gather all the information to identify what criminal charges may be appropriate and by this report, there is no information on the latest condition of the 12-year-old boy. There is no information available about previous history of the dog or the identity of the breed or size of the dog that caused the injuries to the 12-year-old boy.

Animal Care Services has funds available for free spay/neuter surgeries for citizens living in target areas throughout the city.  Thank you to all who took advantage of this offer and came in to have surgery.  There are still funds available which must be spent by the end of March.  Animal Care will collect vouchers for DOGS & CATS living in all of the target areas below.  Please keep in mind that by receiving a voucher it does not guarantee surgery will be performed.  If you have already received a voucher you will be contacted with a surgery date.  The target areas are

Animal Care Services Logo Contest Winner

On January 1^st, 2014, Corpus Christi Animal Care Services & Vector Control announced a logo contest to kick-off the changes of Animal Care Services and new mission for 2014. With 50 submissions, which were all unique and artful, one submission captured the NEW Animal Care Services perfectly.

Miguel Quintanilla of Corpus Christi created the winning logo that will be officially unveiled on 03/06/2014 at 1:00pm at 2626 Holly Rd.  A brief ceremony and award presentation will congratulate Mr. Quintanilla and introduce his creativity to the community. Deceased Dog Found on Holly, Unknown Cause of Death

On 02/03/2014 at approx 4:30 p.m., Corpus Christi Animal Care Services arrived at 7700 block of Holly Rd. to investigate a deceased animal that was called in by the City Solid Waste Department. This area is known for illegal dumping of garbage.

Upon arrival officers observed the remains of a decomposed dog that appeared to be a black Labrador mix. Officers documented and collected the remains and the bottom half of a plastic dog house that the dog was laying in.

Animal Care Services Veterinarian and forensic expert, Melissa Draper, along with Animal Care Services Program Manager, Heather Hedrick, who has taught crime scene investigation for many years and is a Master Peace Officer, examined the dog. During the examination the following was determined:

• The dog was elderly. It was not wearing a collar or microchipped. There is no physical identification on the animal or the dog house to suggest who the owner may be.
• The dog did not appear to have any trauma consistent with abuse or to suggest a cause of death.
• The neck did not appear to be broken. The dog was placed in the box in an awkward manner with the head laying back.
• The dog has been deceased for approximately 3-4 weeks and was in the peutrification stage. What appeared to be blood around the body was actually the natural process of decomposition of the body. The observed decay was characteristic of mass loss. This loss occurs as a result of both the feeding of insects and the purging of decomposition fluids. The bones that were observed protruding around the hips and neck were likely due to natural decomposition not starvation. Experts concluded that the dog died of unknown causes.

Auto Burglar’s Identity Sought

Corpus Christi Auto Theft Detectives are asking the public’s assistance to help identify the suspect  caught on surveillance video burglarizing the victim’s vehicle at a local restaurant.  The suspect vehicle a charcoal gray four-door sedan pulls into the parking lot and parks next to the victim’s blue Yukon.  Shortly thereafter, the suspect vehicle can be seen as it drives away towards Flynn Parkway.

Dog Found in Storm Drain, Rescued by Animal Control Officers

Animal Control Officers rescued a 3-year-old yellow Labrador from a storm drain today.  At 2:30pm,  Animal Control Officers responded to the 6000 block of Lexington Street and discovered a dog trapped in the storm drain.

It appears that the manhole cover was missing when the dog fell in.  ACO Will Rhodes and ACO Adrian Sanchez used a special roping technique to rope the dog, and hoist him to safety.  Once he was rescued, and brought to Animal Care Services, a very special discovery was found.

Three weeks ago, Ty Felton came in to Animal Care Services and reported that his 3-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, Blazer, was missing. But his search did not end there. Mr. Felton became a regular at Animal Control and visited the shelter every single day the facility was open. He created lost/found flyers and searched the local shelters in vain, searching for his beloved Blazer.

After Blazer was admitted into the shelter, given fresh water and food, and looked over by the shelter Veterinarian; Mr. Felton was contacted to identify him. It is believed that Blazer may have been trapped in the storm drain for the entire three weeks and survived off of rain water and possibly vermin that live in the storm drains. Once Mr. Felton was contacted, staff saw him speed in to the parking lot and run to the door of the shelter. He was joyfully reunited with Blazer at 3:30pm. Not a dry eye was left in the office.
