The Corpus Christi Police Department received information that individuals were advertising flat rate cab services, noting that the individuals doing so were not licensed or permitted by the city to operate as such.

The permits for vehicles for hire are regulated by the Municipal Code, Chapter 57.  The permits are required for uniform safety standards which include vehicle safety standards, driver quality, background checks and taxi meter fare standard practices.  It is unlawful for a person to drive or to operate any taxicab or rideshare service in the city unless there has been a license duly issued.

On November 21, 2022, officers were notified of an online posting that advertised flat rate cab rides.  Officers made contact with and were subsequently met by a 45-year-old female, who arrived in a vehicle that was not marked as a cab, had no fare meter, and did not have any display to identify the driver or any cab company.  The driver was provided the opportunity to produce the proper license and permits required for cab service in the city, she was unable to do so.

The 45-year-old female was found to be operating as a cab in the city, without the permits required and was also found to not have complied with the requirements to obtain such permits.  The 45-year-old female was cited for the following violations: Fail to have permitted driver, Fail to Use Posted Fares, Fail to Post Rates, Fail to Secure Certificate, Fail to Pay Operation Fee, and Fail to License Vehicle.

The public should be conscious of hiring only reputable cab companies or rideshare services.

If you call for a cab service and do not see the clear identification of the company, the fare meter, and the identity of the driver displayed; you should not get into the vehicle for your own safety.  Unlicensed cab or rideshare services could present the opportunity to make someone a victim of a crime.  If you have any information about an individual operating as an unlicensed vehicle for hire, please call 361-886-2600.

The Corpus Christi Police Department will continue to monitor complaints of unlicensed cab and ride share services.   Officers will continue to enforce all Texas Vehicle for Hire Ordinances, which will help accomplish our mission to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and to improve the quality of life in our community.
