Offender arrested for stealing a Police Unit

An officer stopped at the 1600 block of Agnes to assist two people as they attempted to push their vehicle out of the roadway. The officer placed his vehicle behind the stalled car so that they would have a barrier between them and any possible traffic.

As the officer was occupied helping the motorist a male entered the marked police vehicle and attempted to drive off. The officer ran to his vehicle and attempted to turn off the vehicle as he struggled with the offender. The offender was able to place the vehicle in drive, dragging the officer for 40 to 50 feet. The officer was able to disengage from the offender and he sustained injuries.

The offender travelled to the 1200 block of Agnes, struck a light pole, came to a stop, and then fled the scene on foot. Detectives were able secure photos of the Offender, 36-year-old Luis Chavarria, and on Thursday January 21st at 1:00 am the Gang Unit found him walking at the 900 block of Leopard.

Luis Chavarria was charged with Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer with a bond of $120,000.00.
