US Marshals, Law Enforcement Partners Help Bring Doctor-Turn-Fugitive to Justice

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On May 31, U.S. Marshals and Texas authorities took custody of fugitive Jaime Sandoval, after he was located and arrested in El Salvador on May 16.
Sandoval is facing a charge of suspicion of sexual assault and for violating his bond conditions in Nueces County, Texas. He allegedly committed the sexual assault while practicing as a medical doctor in Corpus Christi.
Sandoval was to appear in court May 2, but he did not show up. Authorities issued an arrest warrant for the doctor-turn-fugitive on May 3. The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office then asked the U.S. Marshals-led Gulf Coast Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force to assist in the manhunt.
The fugitive investigation for Sandoval gained momentum when authorities received a tip that led them to believe he was in San Salvador, El Salvador. U.S. Marshals coordinated with in-country authorities, who were able to locate and arrest Sandoval on May 16.
Sandoval is now in custody in the U.S. with no bond, awaiting extradition to Nueces County.
“The key to this case was teamwork, said Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Norm Merkel of the Southern District of Texas. “By local, federal, and international partners working together, we got the job done.”
